What oxygen concentration actually means

Every oxygen concentrator listing leads with a percentage. 33%, 90%, 93%. If you have not spent time in this category, those numbers look close together. They are not. The gap between 33% and 93% is the single biggest difference between machines, and it decides whether a machine is right for you far more than weight, noise or price.

The baseline: what you are already breathing

The air in the room with you right now is about 21% oxygen. The rest is mostly nitrogen, around 78%, with trace gases making up the remainder. That 21% figure is stable at sea level and does not change much indoors or out.

This matters because it is the number every concentrator is measured against. A machine that delivers 33% is not delivering a third of what you need. It is delivering about half again as much oxygen as the air you were already breathing.

How a concentrator actually works

An oxygen concentrator does not store oxygen or make it. It takes in ordinary room air and removes most of the nitrogen, leaving a stream that is richer in oxygen than what went in.

The usual method is called pressure swing adsorption. Air is pushed through a material called a zeolite sieve bed, which holds on to nitrogen while letting oxygen pass. When the bed fills with nitrogen, the machine switches to a second bed and vents the first. The two beds alternate continuously, which is the soft cycling sound you hear when a concentrator runs.

How much nitrogen gets removed depends on the size of the sieve beds, the compressor, and how fast you ask the machine to deliver. This is why concentration and flow rate are linked, and why a rated concentration is always quoted at a particular flow setting.

The tiers you will see on sale

Around 30 to 40 percent: light enrichment

These machines lift the oxygen content of the air modestly above room level. They are small, light, quiet and inexpensive, because a lower target concentration is far less demanding on the compressor and sieve beds.

They are sold for general wellness use. They are not built to deliver clinical concentrations and should not be bought in the expectation that they will.

Around 87 to 96 percent: high concentration

This is the range clinical oxygen equipment operates in, and it is a substantially harder engineering problem. Machines here are heavier, draw more power, and cost more, because getting from 33% to 93% means removing far more nitrogen per litre of air.

Most machines in this tier quote something like 93% plus or minus 3%, meaning the manufacturer expects output between 90% and 96% under standard test conditions.

Why the flow setting changes the answer

A concentrator's stated purity is measured at a specific flow rate, usually a low one. Ask the same machine for more litres per minute and the sieve beds have less time to work, so concentration falls.

This is why a bare percentage is an incomplete claim. The useful version is 93% at 2 L/min, or a table showing concentration across the full flow range. When you compare machines, compare them at the flow rate you would actually use.

Conditions that move the real number

  • Altitude. Air is thinner higher up, so there is less oxygen per litre going in. Most manufacturers specify a maximum altitude for rated performance.
  • Temperature and humidity. Sieve beds work less efficiently in heat, and very humid air can reduce performance over time.
  • Filter condition. A clogged intake filter restricts airflow, which drops both flow and concentration. This is the most common cause of a machine that used to work better, and the easiest to fix.

How to read a listing

  • Is the concentration stated at a flow rate? A bare percentage tells you less than it appears to.
  • Does the figure include a tolerance? 93% plus or minus 3% is more informative, and more honest, than a flat 93%.
  • Does the title match the spec table? Listings that headline one figure and quote another are worth avoiding on principle.
  • Is there a number at all? Some listings describe a machine at length without ever stating concentration. That omission is itself information.

Which tier is right for you

This is genuinely a question for your doctor, not a product page. If a clinician has advised you that you need oxygen, they will have given you a concentration and a flow rate, and you should buy to that specification. If you are looking at these machines for general wellness reasons, a lower-concentration unit may be entirely appropriate and will cost considerably less.

What you should not do is buy a 33% machine expecting 93% performance, or spend on a 93% machine when you have no particular reason to need it. Both are avoidable, and both are common.
